The Go Boston Card gives you included admission to your choice of one important historic home in Lexington. Choose from Buckman Tavern or Munroe House.
Buckman Tavern
Buckman Tavern is most famous as the place where several Lexington militiamen gathered on the morning of April 19, 1775, to await the arrival of British troops. When the alarm bell rang, signaling the enemy’s approach, the men left the tavern for Lexington Common.
The interior of Buckman Tavern appears today very much as it did on that fateful morning in 1775, having been restored in the 1920s by the Lexington Historical Society. During this restoration, the original taproom fireplace was rediscovered and the bar was reinstalled. Among the many items on display is the old front door, with its bullet hole made by a British musket ball during the Battle, and a portrait of John Buckman, the proprietor of the tavern in 1775.
Munroe Tavern
On the afternoon of April 19, 1775, the first wave of British troops beat a hasty retreat from Lexington Common to William Munroe’s tavern, where they set up a field hospital in the dining room. It was at Munroe Tavern that they were joined by General Earl Percy’s reinforcements, turning the tide of battle for the day. Today, the beautifully landscaped grounds preserve a legacy of those days with Colonial-era flowers, while a bullet hole in the ceiling of the tap room is a reminder of the violent battle that gave this place its historic legacy. Adding to that legacy is President Washington’s 1789 visit (and he did, in fact, eat here).
